She sensed that I was unsure about what would be the best option and pulled Jere into our conversation. Jere was just as patient and polite and in about 5 minutes, I took his advice and ordered, not the beam I had originally requested, but the one he thought would work best for me. The beam arrived yesterday, delivered by Bill, who was not a contracted shipper, but a three year employee of PA Sawmill. He was equally as pleasant and polite as Kayla and Jere. Custom Box Beams:
Eastern White Pine Box Beams
“Box Beams” are hollow, real-wood beams that are much lighter in weight and easier to install than standard, solid beams. These hollow wooden beams can be used to cover up electrical wiring or plumbing in an elegant way, or can simply serve as a beautiful, natural accent to any home. We offer three-sided beams in our Eastern White Pine, with a variety of stain and finishing options to choose from.

Specifications for Three Sided Beams
Our three-sided beams are perfect for interior walls and ceilings. These beams have an open back for easy mounting and provide the option to conceal exposed wires or plumbing. All of our box beams are fabricated a few inches longer than listed for the customer to cut-to-length on site. Ends may not be square. Temporary/removable interior blocking are included in every beam. Blocking is placed every 24 in. and may be removed to wrap an existing structure, or left in as permanent structural support. 2″ of clearance will be left from the top of the blocking to the top of the box beam. Top edges of three-sided box beams will be straight-lined to sit flush with your drywall. If any required box beams are intended to wrap an existing or planned structure, Pennsylvania Sawmill will require the true dimensions of that structure to ensure adequate interior clearance. Exterior dimensions on beam wraps may vary. Shop drawings may be provided for the customer’s authorization prior to fabrication.

WHAT WOOD SPECIES DO YOU BUILD YOUR BOX BEAMS OUT OF?
We build the majority of our box beams using Eastern White Pine that’s sourced from within a 50 mile square radius of our mill. White Oak is also available upon request, however, it’s 3x the price of our Eastern White Pine box beams.

We offer both a clear coat polyurethane finish, and a stain + clear coat polyurethane finish. For reference, our standard offering of stains and finished can be found here: Stain and Finishes. We’re happy to send samples free of charge, we’d just need to know the colors you’re interested in, and where to send them.
WHAT SURFACE TEXTURE OPTIONS DO YOU OFFER?
Please see below for details about each of the available surface textures:
- Hatchet-Distressed: This finish mimics the marks left by a hand-held adz, giving the wood an aged, distressed looks
- This adds an additional $7.50 /LF
- Hand-Hewn: Similar to hatchet-distressing but with a smoother, more deliberate appearance.
- This adds an additional $10.00 /LF
- Combination of Hatchet-Distressed + Hand-Hewn: A reclaimed timber look that combines the two textures for a more rustic appearance.
- This adds an additional $15.00 /LF
- Skip-Sanded: For a rustic look, this finish leaves behind the circular saw marks while smoothing out any fuzziness. When stain is applied it enhances the warmth of the saw marks.

- Planed-Smooth: Our most modern look, this finish leaves behind a smooth surface.

- Naturally Weathered Gray Board: Similar to reclaimed lumber, but is made using fresh cut wood that is then naturally weathered for 6-12 months. ***subject to availability***
